The Thousand Islands have been a summer resort destination for Canadians and Americans since the late nineteenth and early twentieth century when grand hotels first opened and steamboats toured the waters to cater to distinguished visitors. This popular chain of over 1,800 islands stretches about 80 kilometres (50 miles) from Kingston, Ontario on the St. Lawrence Seaway with islands on both sides of the Canada-US border. The islands vary in size from small, uninhabited rocks to huge islands with residences of all descriptions, including castle-inspired estates such as Singer Castle on Dark Island or Boldt Castle on Heart Island. Other attractions include an antique boat museum in Clayton, NY, the St. Lawrence Islands National Park, and the casino in Ganonoque, ON. The Thousand Islands remain a destination of choice for ship cruising, camping, sportfishing, and resting in world-class resorts.
