This community is rich in heritage and history and the region is often referred to as the Elk Valley or the East Kootenays. With its roots planted in the coal mining industry, Fernie came into being in 1898 when the railroad came through the region. In 1904, fire reduced Fernie to smouldering rubble, and four years later a second and more devastating fire ripped through the town leaving only 32 buildings standing. A new approach was used to recreate the city, buildings of brick and stone became the landscape of the downtown sector. Many of these buildings still exist today giving Fernie a unique heritage component. A true winter paradise! On it's world famous powder you can enjoy skiing and snowboarding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding, snowmobiling and more. With its mild temperatures and clear, blue-sky days, you're sure to discover all of the winter adventure waiting for you.
