came into being in 1898 when the railroad came through the region. In 1904, fire reduced Fernie to smouldering rubble. Four years later a second and more devastating fire ripped through
the town leaving only 32 buildings standing. A new approach was used to recreate the city. Buildings of brick and stone became the landscape of the downtown sector. Many of these buildings still exist today giving Fernie a unique heritage component. Fernie is a true winter paradise! On its world famous powder you can enjoy skiing and snowboarding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding, snowmobiling and more.
